Selling ads in books

Author Michael T. Owens is looking for ways to make money of his new book. His idea? Sell a full page ad in the back of the book on Ebay. So far he hasn't made much money, but to me that isn't the point. He has made some great publicity--an article on Yahoonews, impressive.

see, i think product placements would be less invasive than out and out *ads.*

for instance, "shane hit the automatic locks on his buick le sabre, slid into the bum-warmed leather seat and sipped the Pepsi that sat chilling in his brand new frosted cup warmer."

that could be better than the third page of the book being a full-page ad for li'l jon's latest cd.

Sorry y'all, I disagree. I've used sponsorships for two of my three books, and I think just like in movies, product placement is going to be the wave of the future. I did it with American Suzuki for my next book Friends With Benefits, and it didn't change anything artistically. My main character was riding a motorcycle anyway. But using Suzuki's resources in combination with my publishers is invaluable.

As for ads, that's going to happen too. Although I'd put them in the back, rather than as a page 54 "commercial" ads are going to help smaller publishers compete against large publishers. And that can make the difference between whether or not your publisher is able to do a short run or a larger run plus promotions. I think most authors would be happy to for the trade off since the great majority of authors have books that get little or no promotion.
