We need you Oprah
So about 158 authors got together and signed a petition begging Oprah to bring back her book club. Among the authors included are Amy Tan and Jhumpra Lahiri. What Oprah did for books was indeed amazing, but to say that readers and writers need her book club is a bit much in my opinion. What we really need are more ways besides depending on Oprah to promote literacy and literature. What did we do before Oprah? What will we do after her?

i agree with u. let's face it: people treat oprah like she's a savior to the masses--like she can cure whatever social ailments prevent themselves and singlehandedly skyrocket people into entirely different tax brackets solely on the basis of her co-signature. lol
i've only read one book that had that little "oprah's book club" label on the cover (the rapture of canaan). i thought it was a great book, but i determined to read it regardless of oprah's endorsement, not because of it.
all that said, her involvement in literary endeavors *did* equal cold hard cash for writers who couldn't even get people to pick their stuff up before.
truth be told, we did the same thing *before* oprah as we're doing post-oprah.
and sales are down.
I've read a few Oprah's picks. Some were great, others were, uh just okay. But Oprah is like the easy way out of things. Let's not try to push literacy and reading in schools and communities, lets have Oprah mention a few books.
